Art21 Educators is an intensive, year-long professional development initiative designed to cultivate and support K-12 art educators interested in bringing contemporary art, artists, and themes into their classrooms. Join a national group of educators to explore, discuss, design, and document curriculum around the art of our time.
This program provides a unique professional development opportunity for educators to: spend an intensive year working with Art21 and a network of peers which kicks off with a 6-day institute in New York City; share innovative ideas, resources, and strategies with educators from across the country; and use video and other media to document and reflect on your teaching practice.

The year begins in July 2010 with a 6-day institute in New York City. Participants will work with Art21 staff, visiting artists, and guest presenters to develop a familiarity with contemporary art and artists as well as learn strategies for integrating related themes and working processes into the classroom.
Educators will explore, design, and implement curriculum and will receive a complete set of the PBS series Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century DVDs (seasons 1-5), related Educators’ Guides, and an introduction to a variety of online media resources and strategies for teaching with contemporary art. We’ll be watching and talking about films, visiting museums and galleries, hearing from artists and other educators, and developing lesson ideas. All participants will return to their classrooms with a unique curriculum to be implemented during the school year, as well lesson ideas generated by other participants.
Monthly webinar forums and social networking applications seize on the momentum of the summer institute, introducing participants to new resources and supporting continued curriculum planning and implementation during the 2010-2011 school year. Social networking platforms allow participants to share documentation (video, photography, and writing) of their current work and receive feedback from peers and Art21 Education staff to improve and enhance their teaching in a private online environment.

The weekend will be free for independent exploration of NYC museums and galleries
LOCATION The summer institute is co-hosted by New York University. Daytime sessions will be held on the NYU campus. All participants have the option of staying in NYU summer housing located 5 blocks from the workshop site in the heart of the East Village.
COSTS The summer institute and all distributed resources are free to accepted participants. Participants must pay for airfare to NYC as well as room and board. NYU housing is available at a subsized rate of $50/night for a shared room ($70 for a single). The total fee for 8 nights (Tuesday, July 6 - Wednesday July 14) is $400 per person. NYU Housing does not provide meals. Art21 estimates that participants will spend up to $65 per diem for meals.

APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM
The application deadline for the 2010-2011 round of Art21 Educators has passed. We will release the application for the next round of the program in early 2011.
The 2010-2011 year will include up to fourteen K-12 visual and media arts educators from across the United States. Emphasis will be placed on creating a diverse group that reflects rural, urban and suburban demographics as well as different student populations.
Attend with a friend or colleague. Participants will be selected to attend in teams to help support each other’s work back in the classroom. Ideally teams should apply from the same school or school district.
Teachers are not required to have any specific technology experience or video skills to participate, but must have a willingness to learn about and use online networking forums with training provided by Art21.
Apply because you love contemporary art, you love Art21, and you want to meet other educators who love contemporary art and Art21.
Complete all application requirements and send 2 paper copies along with 2 copies of your video narrative on 2 separate disks to Art21. Complete applications must be received in the Art21 office no later than Friday, March 5, 2010.
All applicants will be notified by March 29, 2010.
