Frequently Asked Questions

Art21 Educators 2010-2011

Q: Is it mandatory that teachers apply in pairs? Could I apply as a single educator?
A: We strongly recommend you apply with a partner. Applying in pairs greatly contributes to the success of the program, and the continued professional development of the participants. Due to the year-long commitment required of the program, pairs are able to support each other and provide peer reflection as each teacher implements his or her curriculum. Though we will review your application if you apply as a single educator, preference is given to those who apply in pairs.

Q: Should partners submit their application together or separately? Should these applications be mailed together?
A: Please mail your individual application materials separately. There is a space provided on the application form to state the name of your partner.

Q: Does my application need to be received by Art21 by the extended deadline of Friday, March 5, or is this the postmark deadline?
A: Your application must be in our hands by the deadline.

Q: Is graduate credit available for Art21 Educators?
A: While we are unable to offer graduate credit, we can provide individual letters to school districts stipulating that participants were involved with a professional development initiative.

Q: Can I apply to Art21 Educators if I am a college/university professional or museum educator?
A: While the program is primarily geared towards art and media classroom teachers, we are open to applicants representing varied institutional perspectives. We do recommend that all applicants have a teaching context in which to apply programmatic resources and learning. If you do apply from another educational context, please tell us how you anticipate benefiting from the program and applying the program to your specific work.

Q: Can I apply to Art21 Educators if I am a K-12 teacher who doesn’t specialize in Art education?
A: We are open to diverse applicants yet our primary focus is our present constituency: K-12 art educators. If you decide to apply to the program, please tell us how you think your curriculum and interdisciplinary context will benefit from Art21 Educators.

Q: Can I apply to Art21 Educators if I am an educator living outside the United States?
A: Unfortunately we are only able to accept educators teaching in the United States at this time.

Q: If I have been rejected from a past year of Art21 Educators, can I apply again? Can I receive feedback on my application in order to make improvements?
A: Yes, you may apply to Art21 Educators if you were not selected in a previous year. Due to the number of applicants, we are unable to provide individual feedback to previous or current applicants.

Q: I am a graduate student in art education and would like to observe the Art21 Educators program as part of my research. Would this be possible?
A: Though we are happy to provide educational resources and information regarding the program, we are unable to accommodate requests to observe the program due to the intimate nature of the institute.

A: If you select the option to stay at NYU, we will try our best to accommodate your requests for room selection. If you do make the selection for NYU housing on your application, and are accepted to the program, you will be expected to fulfill the financial obligation of single or double room occupancy for the week. If you do need to cancel, or find other accommodations after your acceptance, the cost of NYU housing may still be your obligation.

Q: For the lesson plans submitted as part of the application, do you want supplemental materials like handouts, notes, rubrics, etc. included with the lesson plan?
A: We encourage you to submit any materials that accompany your lesson plan – whether it be an overview of the curriculum, final lesson plans, examples of student work, etc. Please remember to submit two copies of everything in your application. These materials will not be returned.

Q: I do not have access to video equipment. What other formats could I use for the video submission.
A: If you are unable to provide a video for your submission, we do require some form of visual/audio profile; this could include a photo-essay, or slideshow with accompanying text or audio. You may also use a digital camera to shoot 1-2 minute video clips that you then combine with audio recordings. As an important part of the application, your willingness to work with technology and gain skills in this mode of communication is greatly valued.

A: Yes, Art21 Educators is an annual program.

Q: Given the fact that you will only be accepting 12 - 14 teachers, will there be a waiting list?
